So it seems my habits are deeply ingrained: I didn't post for more than a week. As it appears that no one is reading this blog (zero hits!) it seems i should change the name.
Anyway, to provide an update to my experiment of a DIY VOIP solution. I stopped. After reading and researching for hours and hours, I decided that the project was beyond the scope of my intentions, and that it was probably too narrow for most of my (intended) readers. So it seems that project is dead. I decided I'd have more luck contacting Vonage (my current VOIP SP) and attempting to negotiate better rates on my service than attempting to set up and maintain my own.
After all, isn't that the heart and soul of being a service-provider, to fill an need and be able to scale it sufficiently and cheaply enough to appeal to a wide audience? When I examined the cost of starting my on VOIP box, including equipment, time and money, I determined that it's much more useful to pay Vonage so I can yell at them when my phone goes down instead of having my wife yell at me. (Please note: she doesn't actually yell, it was merely a humorous hyperbolic illustration).
That thankfully aside, I move on to my next project, which I hope to me slightly more manageable and feasible - should take no more than a week or two - Buckminster Fullerene based space elevator ribbons!
